FOCUS on Local Photographer Jeanette Smith

February 24, 2021

FOCUS Photography Exhibition & Awards, sponsored by Mission Beach Community Bank (Bendigo Bank) opens Saturday April 10, 2021. One exhibitor, local photographer Jeannette SMITH, was pleased to answer some questions for our readers.

What makes a good photograph?

A good photograph is one that you want to return to over and over; a picture that has captured a moment in time and creates an emotional response in the viewer. Not all technically good photos do this - but those that do become great photos.

What is your favourite subject to photograph?

I particularly enjoy photographing people, but nevertheless have spent a lifetime recording the amazing places I have been privileged to visit: Yosemite National Park for instance. But always people first. Faces reflect life.

What type of cameras do you shoot with?

At the moment I am using a Canon EOS77D because it was the best option in my current situation. I have taken great shots on Mamiyas, Hasselblats, SLRs like Pentax, or point and shoots like an advanced Sony non SLR. I love my iPhone of course because it is just so instant!

How do you educate yourself to take better photos?

My Dad bought me a plastic camera when I was little because he wouldn’t let me use his good one. I watched and observed as I grew up and did basic Tech courses in Sydney. Later I was trained by Bill Bradley to take high end racing photos. I look at everything I can get my hands on that has pictures I am inspired by. I try and keep updated with the latest technical information.  But above all, I practise. Digital is awesome. Delete delete keep keep keep!

The FOCUS Exhibition & Awards Opening Night is free of charge but a gold coin donation is appreciated. All proceeds help develop exhibitions, events and programming at Mission Arts. For more information, contact Mission Arts on 4088 6116 (10am-2pm) or email info(at)missionarts.com.au.
