NOT AS GREEN, an amazing exhibition featuring six North Queensland artists opens at Mission Beach Community Arts Centre on Friday, 6 August 2021 at 6:00pm. Carol Giuliany is one of the GREEN artists and has produced an eclectic body of artwork for this exhibition. She is a local artist and volunteer exhibiting at past exhibitions and was pleased to answer some questions for our readers.
How long have you been painting?
I started in 2012 by myself, then attended Mission Arts and joined Sally Moroney’s Art from the Heart group. This was a whole new world for me where I learnt acrylics. Later I enrolled in classes with Kim Rayner, Bingil Bay artist, and learnt oils. My first oil painting was the Great Barrier Reef, with turtles, fish and coral. It is hanging in my home and I am proud of accomplishing this.
What do you identify with or what subject matter influences your painting?
I am driven by what I see. Often, I paint local landscapes, flora, fauna, birdlife.
Do you have a particular process when you paint?
I favour acrylics to first paint with, especially when painting plein air (outside). As acrylics dry quickly, I can finish the painting with oils.
When people view your artwork, what do you want them to experience or think about?
I would like them to know what I am thinking. It would be wonderful if they also discover the painting journey I have been on; they can see what I set out to achieve.
What is the main challenge you face when beginning or ending a painting?
To begin, I must decide what is the first mark to be placed on the canvas. I don’t sketch in my subject; I like to travel from one form to another. I am concentrating on my subject matter chosen in my head. Finishing, that is my biggest challenge, and I ask myself “Should I finish now?” or should I do something more challenging in this or that area?
What do you like about being a GREEN painter?
This is my second exhibition with the GREEN group. I just enjoy the camaraderie, love painting with my peers, we are continually learning from each other. It is a special and wonderful experience which I hope continues for many years yet.
The NOT AS GREEN Exhibition is shown daily from August 6, 2021 to September 7, 2021. It features work by Carol Giuliany, Shara Cassidy, Pete Faulkner, Lynda Hannah-Williams, Bruce Parry, and Sue Pullman.
