Journey into the World of a Picture Book
Shadow, an immersive picture book experience, a new exhibition by Cassowary Coast artist and writer Jacque Duffy, will be shown at Mission Beach Community Arts Centre from Friday the 4th of June to 22nd June 2021.
This solo exhibition showcases a collection of Jacque’s artwork to support the launch of her new picture book release Shadow. Her paintings encourage you to look closely into storytelling, characters, scenes and a a narrative point of view. Each artwork brings a unique experience, unfolding the narrative with vivid watercolours, acrylics, charcoal and pencil.
“I invite viewers into the world of Shadow, entering, and getting lost in this story, walking with characters. Viewers are encouraged to investigate what inspires me, you may discover hidden elements, find that special factor that makes each artwork a unique experience for you.’ Jacque said. ‘Explore emotion of colour, line and movement, feel romance in Shadow’s architecture. Then please, cast your own shadow onto the artwork and become part of the story itself. You’re invited to share photographs of your shadow on social media (#shadowswithshadow). I strongly encourage school groups to visit the exhibition during its showing.”
Jacque Duffy is an accomplished artist and writer with involvement in the Cairns Tropical Writers, delivering workshops and contributing to panel discussions. “One creative project is feeding into the next, I love it” Jacque stated. “I’ve had a few years away from my paint brush and pencil—like most creative people, life can get in the way. Now I’m re-immersing myself in things I love doing – and that’s sculpting with words and creating art that tells a story.’
Jacque is an author/illustrator of several children’s picture books, crime writing, poetry and short stories. Many of her children’s books have been purchased by the Queensland State Government and integrated into universities, schools and libraries. The exhibition will be opened, and book launched on Friday, 4 June by Eve Stafford OAM. Eve is best known as founding chair and Executive Officer of Arts Nexus, a development and service organisation for the arts across Far North Queensland and her service on panels with Arts Queensland and Australia Council for the Arts. Signed copies of Jacque’s book are available on request on this evening.
To coincide with her exhibition Jacque will be conducting a workshop titled ‘Illustrating Your Story’ on creating a book, combining both the written word and illustrations. This workshop (ages 9+ to adult) will be held at Mission Arts on Sunday 6th June from 10am-1pm. Additionally, a colouring competition will be held during the exhibition where several children can win prizes.
